About
Elizabeth Kalfayan holds Bachelor and Masters of Music Degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. She studied with Jacob Bernstein, Arthur Balsam and Martha Williams. Ms. Kalfayan has performed with the Orchestra of St. Peter’s By the Sea, the Metropolitan Lyric Opera, the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, the State Repertory Opera Company and as a Soloist and Chamber Musician. Elizabeth has appeared with K.D. Lang, Ray Charles, Bernadette Peters, Anne Murray, Smokey Robinson, and in the televised Vh1Classics videos with Cindi Lauper and the Doors.
Ms. Kalfayan is co-founder of the Encore String Quartet, Melody Arts Trio, the Harmonia Chamber Players, and founder of the Encore Piano Trio and Merritt Chamber Music Workshops. As an educator, Elizabeth Kalfayan was Director of Strings at the River Dell School District, ECLC School, and has facilitated chamber music workshops at the Puffin Foundation and New Jersey Youth Symphony. Elizabeth Kalfayan is especially known for her performance lectures that present the works and genius of the great composers for the violoncello including Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Shostakovich. With humor and a deep sense of the emotional and historical context, she takes the listener on a journey to the heart of the music. A more intimate and personally enriching relationship with music is fostered.
Her Interactive and Educational Program Series, encourages audience participation with improvisational movement.
In this series, Ms. Kalfayan connects the lives and emotions of
the composers to young audiences through interpreting and performing their masterworks. Each program in the series highlights a different instrument, its history, its technical emoting qualities as well as sharing insights into the performer’s personal journey with his or her instrument.
As the founder and managing director of the New Horizon Symphony Orchestra, Elizabeth Kalfayan brings her innovative and educational programs to young audiences and helps support communities with Classical Music. Ms. Kalfayan is the author of two iBooks entitled CELLO/PLAY SMART FROM THE START A Handbook For Advancing Virtuosity. The two interactive, multitouch iBooks with detailed videos constitute a full curriculum for learning to play the cello and are sold by Apple in 51 countries.
